Eagles can also alter the configuration of their cornea, the outermost layer of the eye and the first layer light enters. The function of the eye’s lens is to focus the incoming light to create a clear image of what the bird is inspecting. The structure of an eagle’s eye is again very different from ours-one of the most notable discrepancies is the lens size found in the eagle eye. ![]() The Comanche Eagle Dance tells their creation myth of the eagle coming to existence through the death of a war chief’s son. So it’s no surprise that Plains Indian tribes saw the Golden Eagle as the embodiment of the warrior and would dress in eagle feathers for strength and courage. Golden Eagles’ raw power is astonishing they are happy to take down or attack any prey they can sink their two-inch talons into. Eventually, I’ll make a trip to the Rockies to photograph these raptors soaring through the skies they hold dominion over. I wish I had taken more photos of this beauty, but I wasn’t as into birds then as I am now. This beautiful bird was in a wildlife rehabilitation facility, and I don’t remember what for exactly. Unfortunately, I’ve never seen a Golden Eagle in the wild before. Now that we’ve mathematically proven eagle eyes are superior to our human eyes let’s see how they are better designed anatomically. Numbers like this clearly show how well natural selection has molded birds into having some of the most efficient senses in living organisms. That’s 13.03 times larger than our eyes currently are! Using this, we can calculate that the human eye makes up 0.03335% of the total body mass, and the eye makes up 0.4439% of an eagle’s body mass.Īll these numbers mean that our eyes would have to weigh 0.8212 pounds, or 372.4901 grams, to match a Bald Eagle’s eye-to-body weight ratio. The average body mass of an American adult is 185.3 pounds, while the largest Bald Eagle weighs in at 13.9 pounds.ĭividing the weight of the eye (0.0617 lbs) by the weight of the human (185 lbs) or eagle (13.9 lbs) will give us a ratio of how much mass the eye makes up. The human eye weighs 28 grams, and for simplicity, this is equal to 0.0617 pounds for our calculations. However, they don’t convey the numbers, and I think that is where the remarkable distinction lies. Nearly every article mentions that eagle eyes are approximately the same size as a human’s. Mathematically Proving How Important An Eagle’s Eyes Are ![]() Thankfully, this bird was rescued, returned to health, and revealed at the teaching zoo to inspire others to help wildlife. Unfortunately, this eagle was hit by a car that mangled the entire left side of its body, meaning release back into the wild would never be an option. The light was filtering through the trees at the right angle to give the dramatic lighting on this magnificent bird’s good side. This particular bird was housed permanently at the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo.
